The final fixtures of the 2017/2018 season were completed on the 18th and 19th of April. On Wednesday 18th April the "A" team travelled to Solihull looking for the one point that would secure their promotion to Division 5 of the Birmingham and District Chess League. Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly and Graham Barrett returned with two points following their 3 - 1 success. The team will now play in Division 5 and will need to recruit two players from the "B" team as the format is six-a-side. The following evening the team of Paul Barrett, Dave Randall, Tom Vanes and Colin Bissell lost in a close encounter by 1½ -2½. This resulted in the team finishing third in a five team league.
On Wednesday 11th April, the Cannock League team of Paul Kelly, Richard Bailey, Colin Bissell and Des Green entertained a strong Bushbury team. Although out graded on three of the four boards, Coleshill played well and achieved a creditable 2 - 2 draw.
Coleshill "A" secured two of the three points needed to gain promotion into Division 5 of the Birmingham League with a 3 - 1 victory at Boldmere St Michaels on Wednesday 4th April 2018. The team of Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly, Graham Barrett and Tom Vanes (deputising for Mike Wildboar who was suffering from flu), beat a determined Boldmere side with some steady play. The final fixture for the team is an away trip to Solihull on Wednesday 18th April. Meanwhile the Cannock League team entertain Bushbury next Wednesday the 11th of April 2018.
Monday 19th March witnessed the "B" team of Eamon Murphy, Malcolm Jones, Richard Bailey and Des Green lose out in four close games to Kynoch by 1½ - 2½ in the Birmingham League. Three days later and Eamon Murphy, Dave Randall, Colin Bissell and Kieran Mills (making his Coleshill debut), entertained Lichfield in a Cannock League match and suffered a ½ - 3½ defeat.
Wednesday 28th March saw the "B" team return to winning ways when they defeated Boldmere St Michaels in their final Birmingham League match of the season. The successful team of Eamon Murphy, Malcolm Jones, Richard Bailey and Tom Vanes won by 3½ -½.
The "A" team return to action in the Birmingham League on Wednesday 4th April when they travel to Boldmere St Michaels in an attempt to secure two of the three points needed for promotion to Division 5 of the Birmingham League.
Wednesday 7th March witnessed the "A" team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly and Graham Barrett defeat Kynoch in a Birmingham League Match by 4 - 0. This was their fifth victory on the trot and they enhance their chance os promotion to Division 5. Five days later however they suffered a setback when the same players travelled to Rushall and suffered a 1½ -2½ defeat. The team are still well placed and now need three points from their last two games to be certain of finishing second to the University of Birmingham who have completed their season with a 100% record as champions.
The following night the team of Malcolm Jones, Tom Vanes, Kieran Mills and Des Green took part in a lightning tournament at Olton Chess Club. They finished a credible fourth in a group of six well established Birmingham League teams. Special mention must go to Tom Vanes who remained undefeated on the night and gained the scalp of a former Sutton Coldfield team mate rated 75 points above Tom.
The week was rounded off on Wednesday 14th March when Norton Canes were the visitors in a Cannock League division 3 encounter. The match ended in a 2 - 2 draw and Eamon Murphy, Tom Vanes, Colin Bissell and Des Green are to be congratulated on a fine display.
It was a busy week for the club with matches on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday 21st February, Boldmere St Michaels were the visitors for a Cannock League Division 3 encounter. Unfortunately they arrived with only three players which meant a default win for Trevor Gazee. The rest of the team, Paul Barrett, Eamon Murphy and Colin Bissell, all gave a good account of themselves and the resulting 2 - 2 draw was a fair reflelection of the play. The following night the "B" team travelled to Lichfield in a Birmingham League fixture. The team of Richard Bailey, Dave Randall, Colin Bissell and Des Green were defeated 1½-2½ but again the result was in doubt until the last minute.
Wednesday 7th February turned out to be a disappointment for the Cannock League team when Norton Canes advised that they were unable to field a team. It would have been easy to claim the points but as we are here to play chess, we have offered them alternative dates and await their reply. The following week, Wednesday 14th February, the Coleshill "A" team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly and Graham Barrett defeated Lichfield by 4 - 0 to move into second place in the Birmingham League Division 6. On Wednesday 21st February the Cannock League team will be in action in a home match against Boldmere St Michaels and the following night Coleshill "B" travel to Lichfield for a Birmingham League Division six fixture. Mike Wildboar suffered defeat in his Birmingham League Individual tournament losing in a five minute quick play match after drawing with his Warley Quinborne opponent after their three hour regulation game.
On Tuesday 30th January, the “B” team of Malcolm Jones, Richard Bailey, Dave Randall and Tom Vanes travelled to Redditch for a Birmingham League Division 6 match. Although out graded on all boards, the team battled hard and narrowly lost by 1½ to 2½. The following evening Richard Bailey was beaten in Birmingham League Individual tournament quarter final by Joe Kadar of South Birmingham Chess Club. The Cannock League team have a home fixture on Wednesday 7th February when Norton Canes are the visitors. The likely team will be Paul Kelly, Eamon Murphy, Des Green and Colin Bissell.
Last week saw the “A” team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly and Graham Barrett travel to Warley Quinborne for a match in the Birmingham League Division 6. They returned with a 4 – 0 victory that has moved them into fourth place in the league. Tomorrow night, Tuesday 30th January, has the “B” team travelling to Redditch for a match in the same league. The probable line up is Malcolm Jones, Richard Bailey, Dave Randall and Tom Vanes. It is another busy week for Richard who will be replaying his Birmingham League individual quarter final against Joe Kadar of South Birmingham at the Coleshill Social Club.
Wednesday 10th January the "A" team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett and Tom Vanes defeated Redditch 3 -1 in a Birmingham League Division 6 fixture. On the same evening there were defeats for Richard Bailey and Malcolm Jones in the Cannock League Individual Tournament and the Birmingham League Individual Tournament respectively to Peter Oliver of Tamworth and Chris Williamson of Warley Quinborne. Colin Bissell and Trevor Gazee drew their match in the Shadow League.
Richard Bailey was in Individual action again on Monday 15th January. He travelled to South Birmingham Chess Club and returned with a draw against Joe Kadar. On Wednesday 17th January the "B" team entertained Solihull in a Birmingham League Division 6 encounter. The team of Malcolm Jones, Dave Randall, Richard Bailey and Tom Vanes triumphed by 2½ to 1½ to gain another two league points. Eamon Murphy defeated Des Green in the last Shadow League fixture of the season and finishes top in this competition.
The "A" team will be in action next week on Thursday 25th January when they will be travelling to Warley Quinborne for a Birmingham League fixture.
The club also welcome new member Kieran Mills.
On Wednesday 3rd January 2018 the "B" team followed up their win against Walsall Kipping with a hard fought 2 - 2 draw against second in the table Warley Quinborne. The team of Malcolm Jones, Dave Randall, Richard Bailey and Tom Vanes competed well against their higher graded opponents. In the Shadow League, Eamon Murphy continued with his 100% record when he defeated Trevor Gazee whilst Des Green and Colin Bissell settled for a draw in their encounter. Next Wednesday the 10th of January there are several events taking place. The "A" team will be entertaining Redditch in a Division 6 League match. Richard Bailey replays his Cannock Chase Trophy match against Peter Oliver of Tamworth and Malcolm Jones welcomes Chris Williamson from Warley Quinborne in the Quarter Final of the Birmingham League Division 6 Individual Trophy. There will also be the final two games in the Shadow League with Des Green taking on Eamon Murphy and Colin Bissell playing Trevor Gazee.
On Wednesday 20th December 2017, the Cannock League team of Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett, Eamon Murphy and Colin Bissell travelled to Bushbury and returned with an emphatic 3 – 1 victory. The following evening, Malcolm Jones, Richard Bailey, Tom Vanes and Des Green representing the “B” team enjoyed a 2½ to 1½ win against Walsall Kipping. This was the first ever win for the second team in the Birmingham League.
The "B" team will be in action again on Wednesday 3rd January 2018 when they entertain Warley Quinborne in a Division 6 match in the Birmingham League.
On Wednesday 6th December the Cannock League team of Tom Vanes, Eamon Murphy, Colin Bissell and Des Green travelled to Boldmere St Michaels. They suffered a 3 – 1 defeat but an appeal has been lodged as the home team exceeded the total grading limit of 370 for the match. It is likely that we will be awarded the league points, further information will follow.
The following night saw Malcolm Jones defeat his Warley Quinborne opponent in just seven moves in a second replay to move into round two of the Birmingham League Individual Trophy where he will have home advantage against Chris Williamson of Warley Quinborne. On the same night Richard Bailey had a draw against Peter Oliver in the second round of the Cannock League Individual Trophy. Richard is also involved in the second round of the Birmingham League Individual Trophy where he faces an away trip to Joe Kadar of South Birmingham Chess Club.
Saturday 9th December witnessed Malcolm Jones and Des Green record victories for the Warwickshire Under 100 team that defeated Staffordshire by 9 and a half points to 2 and a half points.
This coming Wednesday, the 13th of December, there is a fun night night at the club. Eamon Murphy has organised a chess based quiz which will be followed by a tournament that will result in mince pies being awarded to all participants. A £2 fee is all that is asked that will contribute towards club funds.

November 30th saw the "B" team of Dave Randall, Tom Vanes, Eamon Murphy and Colin Bissell beaten 1 - 3 by South Birmingham Chess Club. At the same time time, Des Green defeated Trevor Gazee in the Coleshill Chess Club Shadow League. Richard Bailey has progressed to the second round of the Birmingham League Individual tournament when his opponent withdrew from the competition. In the same tournament, Malcolm Jones travels to Warley Quinborne on Thursday 7th December to play his second replay against his Warley Quinborne opponent. The previous evening, 6th December, sees the Cannock League team's second match of the campaign when they tackle Boldmere St Michaels in an away tie. The probable team will be Malcolm Jones, Eamon Murphy, Colin Bissell and Des Green.
Thursday 23rd November saw the team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Jones and Dave Randall travel to Division four team Walsall Kipping in the second round of the Townshend Trophy. A very gallant effort resulted in a close defeat by 3½ to 4. The previous evening Des Green exited the Birmingham League Division 6 Individual Tournament to his University of Birmingham opponent, the same fate befell Tom Vanes who lost at the same stage to his Warley Quinborne opponent the previous week.
The "B" team are in action this week when they entertain South Birmingham in a Birmingham League Division 6 encounter. The probable team is Dave Randall, Tom Vanes, Eamon Murphy and Colin Bissell. On the same evening Trevor Gazee takes on Des Green in the Shadow League.
On Wednesday 9th November, the "A" team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly and Graham Barrett travelled to South Birmingham Chess Club for a Birmingham League Division 6 fixture. They returned victorious with a 3 - 1 victory to keep in touch with leaders University of Birmingham. On the same night Malcolm Jones replayed his Birmingham League Individual Round 1 tie with John Pakenham and another draw resulted. They have yet to set a venue or date for their third meeting. In the Shadow League, Eamon Murphy defeated Des Green and Colin Bissell beat Trevor Gazee. Eamon leads the way with 9 points, Des follows with 7 and Colin with 5 is ahead of Trevor with 3. This coming Wednesday Richard Bailey entertains Brian Dawson of Kynoch in the Birmingham League individual trophy first round and Eamon Murphy plays Colin Bissell in the Shadow League.
Wednesday 1st November witnessed the defeat of the “B” team by a very efficient University of Birmingham team.
The 0 – 4 scoreline did not reflect the effort put in by the team of Dave Randall, Malcolm Jones, Tom Vanes and Des Green. Des replaced Richard Bailey who was taken ill a few hours before the match. I wish Richard a speedy recovery. On the same evening Eamon Murphy defeated Trevor Gazee in the Shadow League to maintain his 100% record in this competition.
The following evening, Paul Barrett and Malcolm Jones travelled to Warley Quinborne to play their first round games in the Birmingham League Individual Tournament. There was mixed fortunes as Paul, the current holder, suffered defeat whilst Malcolm played out a draw.
This Wednesday the 8th of November the “A” team are travelling to South Birmingham Chess Club for a Division 6 fixture in the Birmingham League. The team is Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly and Graham Barrett. On the same night at the club, the following Shadow League fixtures will take place, Eamon Murphy v Des Green and Trevor Gazee v Colin Bissell. Malcolm Jones will also be relaying his Individual game against John Pakenham of Warley Quinborne.
On Tuesday 17th October 2017 the "A" team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly and Graham Barrett travelled to the University of Birmingham for a Division 6 match in the Birmingham League. They suffered their first defeat of the season going down by 1½ to 2½. The following evening saw the first round of matches in the internal Shadow League. Eamon Murphy defeated Colin Bissell and Des Green was victorious over Trevor Gazee. Next week witnesses Tom White, who had a bye in Round 1, taking on Trevor Gazee whilst Colin Bissell plays Des Green, Eamon Murphy has a bye.
On Wednesday 4th October 2017 the club entertained Solihull from Division 4 in the first round of the Townshend Trophy a competition for clubs playing in Division 4 to 6 of the Birmingham Chess League. Despite the two divisions gap and with the assistance of one and a half handicap points the team produced an excellent performance and beat their higher graded opponents to win by six and a half points to one. Congratulations go to Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Jones, Richard Bailey and Tom Vanes. We eagerly await our opponents in round two. Next week is a club night and the next league action is on Tuesday 17th October when the "A" team will visit the University of Birmingham in a division six clash.
On Wednesday 27th September Coleshill "B" gained a creditable draw against a strong Rushall team. The team of Malcolm Jones, Richard Bailey, Tom Vanes and Des Green raised their games and secured a 2 - 2 result to obtain their first league point of the season. The next fixture for the club is a Birmingham League Trophy match against Solihull from Division 4. This will be another tough match being played over six boards.
The projected team is Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Jones, Richard Bailey and Tom Vanes. The club receive a handicap of one and a half points due to the difference in divisions between the teams. The players are looking forward to pitting their wits against a higher division team.
The "A" team continued their fine start to the season with a hard earned victory against Walsall Kipping. The team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly and Graham defeated their visitors by 2 and a half to 1 and a half. Next Wednesday will see the "B" team pitting their wits against a strong looking Rushall outfit.
The 2017/2018 season started last week when the the team of Dave Randall, Richard Bailey, Colin Bissell and Des Green travelled to Norton Canes in a Cannock League Division 3 fixture on Tuesday 12th September. Four closely contested games saw the team return with a 3 - 1 defeat. The following evening the Birmingham League Division 6 programme commenced. As we have two team in the same division, the league dictate that we meet each other in the first game. The "A" team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly and Graham Barrett defeated the "B" team of Malcolm Jones, Richard Bailey, Tom Vanes and Trevor Gazee by 4 - 0. A good night was enjoyed by players from both sides.
On Wednesday 20th September, the "A" team are in action again when they entertain Walsall Kipping for a 7:30 pm start. The provisional team is Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Paul Kelly and Graham Barrett.
The club has arranged the following three pre-season matches. On Wednesday 26th July we will be travelling the short journey to Westminster Chess Club in Acocks Green for a six-a-side challenge match. The following Wednesday, the 2nd of August we welcome Mutual Circle in a four-a-side match.Wednesday 9th of August will be a return match against Westminster, number of boards yet to be decided. It is anticipated that all club members will play at least one match before the season starts on Wednesday 6th of September that will see Coleshill "A" entertain Coleshill "B".
