Coleshill Chess Club 2016/17 Week by Week Information
The final action of the season was at Olton Chess Club on Tuesday 2nd May when Paul Barrett defeated his South Birmingham Chess Club opponent, Joe Kadar, in the final of the Birmingham League Individual Tournament. Congratulations go to Paul who has won the first ever trophy for the fledgling chess club. The AGM of the club will be held on Wednesday 17th May 2017 in the Parkfield Suite commencing at 7:30 pm. Potential new members are very welcome.
Wednesday 29th March 2017 was the last match of the Birmingham League season for the chess team. The team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Tom Vanes and Richard Bailey defeated South Birmingham "B" by 3 - 1. The team accumulated fifteen points from their twelve games and will finish a creditable fifth or sixth from a thirteen team division, dependant on one fixture that could see us overtaken by Rushall. The team will hopefully be entering the Birmingham Summer League, full details will be given at a later date. Next Wednesday is a club night, anyone with an interest in playing chess is welcome to attend a get a flavour of the club.
On Wednesday 22nd March 2017 the team of Malcolm Jones, Tom Vanes, Trevor Gazee and Colin Bissell recorded their first win of the Cannock Chase League campaign with a two and half to one and a half victory. This was the last match of the season in this league and coupled with the draw last week the team finished on a high note. The last match of the Birmingham League season is next Wednesday the 29th of March when the team will entertain South Birmingham “B”. The match last week against Solihull was declared a draw following the illness of one of our members, He suffered a heart attack and I am glad to report that he is recovering well at home.
On Tuesday 14th March the team of Malcolm Jones, Tom Vanes, Trevor Gazee and Des Green travelled to Mutual Circle for a friendly match arranged to give players from both sides the opportunity of some competitive chess. They returned with a 3 - 1 victory. The following evening the team of Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Jones and Des Green visited Solihull for the penultimate match in the Birmingham League. The match was overshadowed with a medical incident involving one of our players. The score was recorded as a defeat by 1½-2½ but the club has lodged an appeal regarding this result. On Wednesday 22nd the team will be playing its last match of the Cannock Chase League when they entertain Norton Canes.
Wednesday 9th March 2017 saw the Coleshill Chess team gain their first point of the season in the Cannock Chase Chess League. The team of Malcolm Jones, Richard Bailey, Colin Bissell and Des Green returned from Lichfield with a hard fought 2- 2 draw. The club is in action twice next week. On Tuesday 15th March the probable team of Tom Vanes, Richard Bailey, Trevor Gazee, Colin Bissell and Des Green will be travelling to Mutual Circle in a friendly encounter. The following evening the Birmingham League squad of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett and Malcolm Jones go to Solihull in the penultimate match of the season.
On Wednesday 1st March 2017 the team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett and Malcolm Jones recorded their fourth league win of the season when defeating visitors Kynoch Chess Club. This move the club into sixth spot in the Birmingham League. Next week it is the turn of the Cannock Chase League squad who will be attempting to gain a first win of the season in Division 4. The probable team will be Tom Vanes, Richard Bailey, Colin Bissell and Des Green.
Wednesday 15th February 2017 the club welcomed Boldmere St Michaels for a Cannock League match. Some closely encountered games resulted in a 1 - 3 defeat against a team that heavily out graded us on all boards. Next Wednesday 22nd February is a club night with the next Birmingham League fixture being a home match against Kynoch.
Wednesday 8th February the club welcomed Mutual Circle for a return friendly match for those members of both sides needing more match time. The team of Tom Vanes, Trevor Gazee, Des Green and Colin Bissell were beaten 4 - 0, all four games were eagerly contested and the score does not reflect the effort that all players made. On the same night Paul Barrett overcame Malcolm Jones in the semi-final of the Birmingham League Division 6 Individual Tournament. Paul now waits to find out who is opponent will be later in the season. Next Wednesday 15th February the club have a home match in the Cannock League against Boldmere St Michaels, we shall be looking for revenge after a close defeat at Church Road earlier in the season.
Monday 30th January 2017 saw Paul Barrett travel to Warley Quinborne to play his first match in the Division 6 Individual Tournament of the Birmingham League. He returned triumphant and his reward is a semi-final tie with Coleshill's Malcolm Jones. The match has provisionally been arranged for Wednesday 8th February. Paul returned to Warley on Thursday 2nd February along with Mike Wildboar, Graham Barrett and Malcolm Jones for a Division 6 encounter. They triumphed with a 3 - 1 win which moves the club onto 10 points and 7th in the league. Next Wednesday 8th February sees a return friendly match with Mutual Circle.
Tuesday 24th January 2017 saw the team of Richard Bailey, Trevor Gazee, Des Green and Colin Bissell travel to Division 5 team Mutual Circle to play a friendly fixture. This had been arranged to give some of their new players a taste of competitive chess. Four interesting games were played and honours were shared in a 2 - 2 draw. The following night West Midlands Police "A" entertained the Birmingham League Division 6 team of Mike Wilboar, Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett and Malcolm Jones. The contest is still undecided as one board has gone to adjudication with the current score standing at 1½ each. Next Thursday, 2nd February 2017, is the next fixture for the Division 6 squad with a visit to Warley Quinborne.
On Wednesday 18th January 2017 the team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett and Malcolm Jones travelled to second in the table South Birmingham "A" team. They faced a tough, uncompromising quartet and emerged with a creditable draw 2 - 2. This leaves the club currently in seventh place of a thirteen team league. There are two fixtures next week commencing on Tuesday 24th January when we will be travelling to Mutual Circle in a match arranged to ensure that all players are playing on a regular basis. The following night we will be on our travels again to play another potentially tough engagement at Tally Ho! against third placed West Midlands Police "A".
On Wednesday 21st December 2016, the club held a three round Swiss system Rapidplay event. Eight members attended and a good night was enjoyed by all. Paul Barrett emerged as the overall winner with a maximum three points. Other competitors were John Higgs, Graham Barrett, Richard Bailey, Malcolm Jones, Trevor Gazee, Des Green and Colin Bissell. Everyone received a mince pie and thanks to Richard for supplying a tin of sweets, they were very much appreciated! The club will next meet on Wednesday 11th January 2017.
On Wednesday 14th December 2016 the Birmingham League team were scheduled to visit the Tally Ho! venue to play against the West Midlands Police "B" team. Their captain advised us that the Coldstream Guards had been booked in for their Christmas party and that it may be a little noisy as the room was next to where we were expected to play chess! We were able to switch the match to Coleshill and the team of Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Jones and Des Green were victorious by 3½ to ½. The last meeting of the year will be next Wednesday 21st December on which occasion there will be a club fun competition with some mince pies on offer!
Wednesday 7th December 2016 witnessed the team of Paul Barrett, Tom Vanes, Colin Bissell and Des Green take on Lichfield in a Division 4 Cannock Chase League fixture. All of the games turned out to be close affairs with the result in doubt until the final few moves. Lichfield emerged victorious by 3 - 1 and Coleshill still await their first victory in this league. The team return to Birmingham League action next Wednesday 14th December with a trip to play West Midlands Police "B" team in a Division 6 encounter.
On Wednesday 23rd November 2016 the team enjoyed its first league success of the season with a 2½ -1½ victory over previously undefeated Birmingham University. Congratulations to the team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett and Richard Bailey. It was also encouraging to see six other club members in attendance. Next week is a club night with no league fixtures scheduled. On Saturday 26th November 2016, two of the club members, Des Green and Malcolm Jones will be travelling to Leicester to play for Warwickshire against Leicestershire in the qualifying round of the County Championship tournament for players graded less than 100.
Week commencing 7th November 2016, saw three of the club's members in action in the individual tournament for players in division six of the Birmingham League. There were mixed fortunes as Des Green was eliminated on Wednesday by Joe Kadar of South Birmingham. Thursday saw Richard Bailey suffer the same fate to John Pakenham of Warley Quinborne, however Malcolm Jones was triumphant against Harvey Watkins also from Warley Quinborne. Malcolm now joins Paul Barrett in the second round, Paul having had the fortune to have received a bye in round 1.
Wednesday 16th November saw the team tackle Solihull from two divisions higher in the second round of the Dudley Townshend Trophy. The team of Mike Wildboar, Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett, Malcolm Jones, Tom Vanes and Colin Bissell put up a good fight but despite receiving a handicap of 1½ were defeated by 3 - 4½. Attention now turns to next Wednesday 23rd November when the team entertain Birmingham University in a Division 6 fixture.
On Wednesday 2nd of November the team travelled the short journey to Boldmere St Michaels in a Cannock League Division 4 fixture. Four evenly matched games took place and the team of Graham Barrett, Richard Bailey, Colin Bissell and Des Green returned home defeated by 2½ to 1½. The match was played in a very good spirit and there was little to choose between the players of both sides, this is exactly why the division was created.
Next week sees three of the club's members competing in the first round of the Birmingham League Division 6 Individual Tournament. Des Green plays an opponent from South Birmingham Chess Club in a home fixture and both Richard Bailey and Malcolm Jones travel to Warley Quinborne for their matches.
Wednesday 26th October saw yet another strong team visit Coleshill in a Division 6 encounter in the Birmingham League. Shirley & Wythall continued with their 100% start to the season when they defeated the home team by 2½ to 1½ in what turned out to be four keenly contested matches. Mike Wilboar, Paul Barrett, Malcolm Jones and Tom Vanes ensured that their opponents left knowing that they had been in a game! Next Wednesday 2nd November the attention turns back to the Cannock League when Coleshill will be visiting Boldmere St Michaels in a Division 4 clash.
On Tuesday 18th October the team of Graham Barrett, Malcolm Jones, Trevor Gazee and Des Green took their first step into the newly formed Cannock Chase League Division 4 where they met a Norton Canes team who were playing their first ever league match at any level. It turned out to be an exciting encounter with the home team being victorious 3½ to1½. They must be congratulated on a pleasant club and their hospitality was beyond reproach, exactly how the Cannock League likes to play its matches. The club will be back on duty in the Birmingham League on Wednesday 26th October when they entertain Shirley & Wythall in what is to be expected to be another Division 6 fixture in the Birmingham League.
The team of Graham Barrett, Paul Barrett, Trevor Gazee and Des Green travelled to Walsall Kipping on Thursday 13th October for their third league match of the season. They returned with a 1 - 3 defeat against a very experienced Walsall team. The team are in action again on Tuesday 18th October when they travel to Norton Canes for their debut in the Cannock Chase League. The selected team is Graham Barrett, Malcolm Jones, Trevor Gazee and Des Green.
Wednesday 5th October witnessed a strong Rushall team being held to a 2 - 2 draw by the Coleshill boys. Mike Wildboar, Graham Barrett, Paul Barrett and Colin Bissell raised their games and sent the Rushall lads home with a hard earned point. Next Thursday 13th October the team are off to play their next league match away to Walsall Kipping.
Wednesday 28th September saw the first ever Birmingham League Trophy match for the fledgling Coleshill Chess Club. An eagerly awaited match against Kynoch from Division 6 of the Birmingham League resulted in a fine 5-1 victory for the Coleshill team. Mike Wildboar, Graham Barrett, Tom Vanes, Malcolm Jones, Richard Bailey and Trevor Gazee sent the team into the second round of the Dudley Townshend Trophy. The next league match in Division 6 is a home tie against a potentially strong Rushall team on Wednesday 5th October with a 7:30 pm start.
On Tuesday 6th September the team of Paul Barrett, Colin Bissell, Trevor Gazee and Des Green travelled to Halesowen for the first ever competitive league match for the Coleshill Chess Club. We were out graded on each of the boards but managed to come away with a very creditable 2 - 2 draw. The next match for the team is not until Wednesday 28th September when we entertain Division 6 Kynoch in the first round of the Dudley Townshend Trophy, a competition for clubs in Divisions 4 to 6 in the Birmingham League. Unlike the league matches, this is a six a side competition.
On Thursday 25th August 2016 the Coleshill team of Paul Barrett, Malcolm Jones, Trevor Gazee and Des Green participated in a Rapid Play tournament organised by Tamworth Chess Club. The tournament was well organised and played in a good spirit by all participants and rounded off with an excellent buffet. Despite finishing third of the three teams, all of the Coleshill players performed exceptionally well against much higher graded opponents from Ashby and Tamworth.
On Wednesday 17th August we entertained Westminster Chess Club in a return friendly. The match was played over five boards and the team of Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett, Colin Bissell, Malcolm Jones and Thomas White lost by 31/2 to 11/2 against higher graded opponents. The evening was however considered to be a great success and there are plans for annual pre-season matches between the two clubs.
The simultaneous display given by Mike Wilboar on the 10th August attracted eight club members. Mike played with white pieces against all opponents and utilised a variety of openings. He won seven and drew one of the games and was rewarded with a complimentary packet of Hobnobs! A great night enjoyed by all who participated.
On Wednesday 3rd August 2016 Coleshill visited Westminster for a pre-season friendly. The team of Paul Barrett, Graham Barrett, Richard Bailey, Colin Bissell, Trevor Gazee and Des Green were defeated by 4 1/2 to
1 1/2. All of the players performed well and the match was played in a good spirit against a team who will be playing their chess in division 5 whereas Coleshill will be battling away in division 6 of the Birmingham League.
The club played its second match on Wednesday 27th July. It was friendly fixture against Norton Canes.
The team of Graham Barrett, John Higgs, Colin Bissell and Des Green drew an exciting match by 2-2.
The club played its first match on Wednesday 20th July. It was friendly fixture against Lichfield.
The team of Paul Barrett, Richard Bailey, Malcolm Jones, Tom Vanes, Trevor Gazee and Yulia McAndrew were successful with a win by 3 1/2 to 2 1/2.
